Prime Sheep - 10.01.24

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,071 prime sheep, comprising of 2,120 prime hoggs & 2,951 cast ewes & rams.

A slightly smaller show of hoggs with meat in short supply and several vendors coming to the end of this season’s crop, but nevertheless a SQQ average of 299ppk topping at 398ppk for a pen of 40kg Beltex Hoggs from Messrs R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe, realising £159 purchased by Worsley Wholesale Butchers, with this consignment of 127, 45.7kg hoggs to average £144.17/315ppk.

A consignment of 48 excellently fed heavy hoggs, from Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall averaged 52.7kg, £153/290ppk topping at £167 for 49kgs.

A run of 30 Handy weights from Messrs Lowis, Galloper Park, averaged 40kgs/338ppk

Orders went uncomplete with further fed hoggs required on a weekly basis.

A complete ringside of 13 buyers were forward for the Cast Ewe and Rams sale with all classes holding well and more numbers required. Quality smashing £200 on piece were topping at £300 from Glenroyd Road, with a pair of Texels selling to Pak Mekka Meats.

A consignment of 120 exceptionally fed and turned-out ewes from Messrs A M Connor & Son, Shilmafilly, Aberdeen, averaging £153.44 topping at £280, and a pen of 4 at £270 with 20 ewes from this home selling in excess of £200.

Heavy ewes still comfortably £150-£160, with a pen of Suffolks £145-£160, with Mr M Kennedy, Romanvale selling a pen of 10 Suffolks, realising £166 purchased by J B Foods, Bradford and the same home selling tups to £190.

Backmuir Livestock topped with Scotch Mules to £115 for a pen of 18 selling to Mr A Dawson, with English Mules topping at £128 from Mr R Jenkinson, Cliburn. Horned ewes just creeping up the tree once again with swales mid £60’s, early £70’s for meat, Scotch Blackfaced achieving £80-£90 with weight and flesh.
