On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their opening sale of 5,723 prime sheep, comprising of 2,940 prime hoggs & 2,783 cast ewes & rams.

Another brilliant entry of prime hoggs were brought forward to our opening prime sheep sale of 2024. Vendors definitely didn’t leave disappointed with the dearest trade witnessed so far this season. A whole sale average of £132.50 was achieved, this was £20 up on the same week last year. An SQQ average of 308p/kg (overall 296p/kg) was achieved.

Topping today’s sale at 388p/kg was a single Beltex weighing 40kg to realise £155 from Messrs Holliday and Graham, Bolton Wood Lane Farm, Wigton. This was closely followed at 383p/kg for a pen of three weighing 40kg to realise £153 from Messrs W H Brass, Low Row.

Top price of the day was £170 this was achieved for a single Texel hogg weighing 68kg from Messrs J G & R W Nevinson & Son, High House Farm. This home’s run of 25 were sold to average £159.

Messrs T E Irving & Sons, East Cliff, sold a lovely run of Suffolk & Texel hoggs to average £152.26.

Suffolks topped at 311p/kg (£137) for 44kg from Messrs J C Robinson, Blackleases. Mule hoggs sold to a sharper trade on the week, topping at £138 for a pen of twenty, weighing 57kg from Messrs Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill.

The new year came in with a bang, with the buzz around the ewe ring electrifying. This resulted in an overall average of £106.08 being achieved.

The talk across the country of the demand and trade being less was far from the truth here. Please do not under sell your ewes when the competition here is so strong with our ring of twelve active buyers.

A total of 73 ewes sold in excess of £200, topping at £300 for a pair of Texel ewes from Messrs A J & L J Haston, Dearham Hall, selling to Mr J Linsley. This consignment averaged £287.

Further consignments from West Cumberland achieved great retunes, with an excellent consignment of thirty well-presented ewes from Messrs T & J Airey, New Grange Farm, achieved an average of £241.73, topping at £260 for a pen of six. Mr J J Crichton, Loughrigg, sold ewes to average £250.63, topping at £285 for a pair of Continental ewes, selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham.

Pens of ewes with weight were regularly selling for £150-£165, with Suffolks topping at £168, with plenty of others selling for £150 plus.

Mules were regularly selling at £100 plus, for flesh and weight and topped at £118. Horned ewes once again sold with ease, with Swaledale ewes selling in excess of £60, topping at £71 from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck, for a pen of twelve.
