Prime Lambs 201223

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale, with another good entry of 6,059 prime sheep, comprising of 2,400 prime lambs & 3,659 cast ewes and rams.

A far better show of well-finished lambs were on offer, with a whole sale average of £129. Top price of 372ppk was achieved for a pen of 7, weighing 39kg, realising £145 from regular supporter M/s Gribbon, Waterside Farm. Top price per head was £167 for 2 lambs, weighing 58kg from M/s Thompson, Bromley Green and secondly for a single, 60kg Suffolk lamb from M/s Williamson, Dykehead.

All classes of lambs sold to far superior rates with demand being exceptionally high. Suffolks sold to 310ppk, for 4 at 48kg, selling to £149. Cheviot Mule lambs sold to 279ppk for a pen of 12, weighing 51kg and achieving £143.

Ewe numbers once again held strong, a record entry was forward for December with a ringside of 12 active buyers keen for all classes ensuring a sale average of £95.11 was achieved, trade was up considerably on the week. The sale topped at £300 twice, firstly for a single Texel ewe from Holme House and secondly for a Texel ewe from Mr A Straney, Glenroyd Road, both purchased by Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham.

Tups topped at £200 for a Continental from Messrs TR & PE Little, Low Moor Dyke, purchased by JB Foods, with numerous others realising £150-£170 per head.

A consignment of 15 Texel ewes from Messrs AD & FE Elliott, Askrigg Hall, averaged £215.73 with numerous pens achieving over £200 throughout the sale.

Weight sold with ease, Suffolk ewes topped at £215 from Glenroyd Road, closely followed by a pen of 5 realising £190 from Mr CB Abernethy, Belvedene.

A ring full of English Mules topped at £132 from Messrs JD Bowness, Cliburn Hall, with plenty of pens realising over £110.

Loads of demand from horned ewes, with meat and weight regularly £80-£85.
