Prime Sheep 010223
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,764 prime sheep, comprising of 2,444 prime hoggs & 2,320 cast ewes & rams.
Another good show of prime hoggs was forward at our weekly sale with well-fed and finished hoggs seeing very little change in price compared to last week, an overall average of 235ppk was achieved with the best Beltex and Continental hoggs still easily selling in excess of 300ppk. The sale topped at 341ppk for a pen of six Beltex hoggs from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands, weighing 41kg, totalling £140, with this home also selling pens of hoggs at 339ppk and 337ppk.
Top price per head was achieved for a pen of three Suffolk hoggs, weighing 76kg, realising £157 from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, purchased by Mr J Linsley.
Mule hoggs sold well with weight proving good to sell, topping at £123 for a pen of sixteen weighing 56kg from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House, with this home also selling a pen of twenty-one weighing 50kg to 224ppk/£112.
A sale average of £97.08 was achieved for all cast ewes sold. The sale topped at £276 for a pen of six Texel ewes from Holme House, selling to Mr J Linsley.
Quality still sold well, achieving over £200 per head, with this type short of buyers’ requirements.
Heavy ewes still sold in excess of £140, with Suffolks topping at £146, closely followed at £140 for a pen of ten.
