On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 176 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
A larger show of calves and stirks was forward with the quality on offer as good as seen for a while, the ringside was exceptionally busy with purchasers keen for stock. The sale topped at £880 for a 14-month-old Beef Shorthorn bullock from Messrs J & B Donald, Lamonby Hall, with this home also realising £800 for Hereford bullocks.
A pen of five Aberdeen Angus bullocks achieved £560 per head from Mr B Hogg, Cairnbridge Farm, purchased by Mr J Field.
Skirwith Abbey sold a lovely run of twenty-four, 4 to 5-month-old, Limousin & British Blue bulls and heifers to average £455, topping at £570 for a pair of Limousin bull stirks.
Cattle aged over three months are still in high demand and many more could be sold to vendors advantage.
A good show of young calves was forward, topping at £430 for an Aberdeen Angus bull from Messrs Messenger, Howes Farm, with this home also selling British Blue bulls to £400. British Blue heifers topped at £350 from Brackenburgh Home Farms.
Black & White calves remained in fantastic demand with young Friesian calves topping at £240 from Messrs J & AG Nicholson, Causeway Foot Farm. Stronger Holstein calves topped at £270 for a pen of 5 from The Elephant, with this consignment of twelve averaging £202.
