On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,017 prime
A much improved show of lambs was forward with an SQQ average of 257ppk being achieved, this being up 6ppk on the week. The overall sale average was 256ppk, this being up 8ppk on the week.
The sale topped at 330ppk for a pen of quality Texel cross lambs from Messrs Errington, Sockbridge Hall, realising £132, purchased by Yorkshire Halal, this run of lambs averaged 301ppk/£114.27 for 37kg.
Messrs RG Todd, Crosby Hall, sold some outstanding Beltex lambs to £130 (325ppk) for 40kg, with numerous other pens from the same home realising in excess of 300ppk.
Messes AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, sold their first draw of 46 Texel cross Beltex lambs to average 296ppk/£123.78 for 41.5kg.
Heavy lambs rocketed in value with all customers keen to purchase, Messrs TF &GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm, sold 39 Texel cross lambs to a top of £154, purchased by Mr N Lomax, this run averaged 259ppk/£120.60 for 46kg.
Messrs Hird, Broomhill, Aspatria, sold 54kg Suffolk cross Mule lambs to a top of £144, with a ring full of 48kg lambs achieving £126 from the same home.
Messrs WH & M Sisson & Sons, Fenton Farm, sold a majority run of Suffolk cross Texel lambs to average a staggering 267ppk/£131.44 for 49kg.
Messrs A & N Bennet, Hollins Farm, sold a ring full of 51kg Mule tup lambs to £117 and Mr GP Taylor, Swathburn, sold 42 Mule lambs, weighing 45kg to £102, purchased by Mr R Skelton.
Another bumper show of cast ewes was forward with heavy ewes very easy to sell, the sale topped at £198 for a pen of Texels from Backmuir Livestock, purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Plenty of heavy ewes sold in excess of £130, with Mules topping at £124 purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.
Mr L Skelton, Low House Farm, sold a pen of Herdwick ewes to a top of £69, with this run of 85 Welsh Mountain, Herdwick and Swaledale ewes averaging £68.98.
A ringside of thirteen active buyers ensured all classes were keenly bid for and smashed local competitors trade this week, with plenty of runs of ewes achieving £120-£130.
