On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 87 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
A smaller offering of calves and stirks was forward and witnessed a sharp trade, especially for strong 6-10-month-old cattle. The sale topped at £810 for a ten-month-old Charolais bull stirk from Mr K Hunt, Braithwaite Shields, purchased by Mr J Field.
Messrs J & B Donald & Son, Lamonby Hall, sold a pen of 4 good square British Blue bullocks, nine-months-old, to £795. Heifers from this home achieved £690.
A pen of 3 thick-bred suckler Aberdeen Angus cross bullocks achieved £660 from Messrs JH & E Ivinson, Plumpton Foot.
Young calves were in short supply with Messrs Turnbull, Monks House, selling nine-week-old British Blue heifers to £420, purchased by Mr G Fisher. Freshly born British Blue bull calves, three-weeks-old, achieved £355 from Messrs AD & FE Elliott, Askrigg Hall.
Black & Whites topped at £530 for a six-month-old bullock from Messrs J & AG Nicholson, Causeway Foot Farm, although younger types would be easier on the fortnight.
