Prime Sheep - 11.10.23

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,045 prime sheep, comprising of 2,348 prime lambs & 3,697 cast ewes & rams.

Another bumper entry of Cast Ewes and Rams were forward to an increased ring of buyers. All classes were strong to sell from grazing ewes to the very best. The sale topped at £250 from Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge with a super Texel Ewe selling to Pak Mecca Meats LTD. Plenty of demand for quality and falling short of buyer’s requirement.

A ringfull of 23 Scottish Mules from weekly customers Backmuir Livestock achieving £113 purchased by Mr A Dawson. A consignment from the Cairngorms, Phoines Estate topped the Scottish Blackface section at £100 for a pen of 20 and another pen at £93 for 27.

Cast Rams a strong trade with Holme House selling Charollais to £220 and Backmuir Livestock selling a pair to £210.

A brilliant entry of 2348 sheep were forward with a flying trade across the board for all classes with buyers eager to purchase sheep. Trade was up £8 - £10 on the week and the whole sale average of £124.20, was £12 up on the same week last year. An SQQ average of 287ppk was achieved.

Top price realised was £166 for a cracking pen of 7 Beltex lambs weighing 43kg from M/s Gardner, Glebelands purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn. Top price per kilo of 388ppk was achieved for a brilliant single Beltex lamb weighing 41kg realising £159 from M/s Sisson, Fenton.

Heavy lambs proved great to sell with 50kg regularly making £130 plus. Suffolks topped at £140 for 52kg for a pen of 3 from M/s Bell, High Dyke. Suffolks up to 270ppk for a pen of 20 at 43kg (£116) from M/s Hird, Westray.

Cheviot Mule lambs topped at £130 for a pen of 24, 50kg lambs from M/s Ridley, Ranbeck with M/s Lowis, Waterside selling Mule lambs to £122 for 52kg. Many more lambs can be sold on a weekly basis to fulfil buyers needs.
