Late Autumn Fair of Breeding Sheep 2023

On Tuesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Late Autumn Fair of 798 breeding sheep, including the second sale of North of England Mule gimmer lambs, breeding ewes, shearlings & gimmer lambs. This sale also included The Annual “Troutbeck” sale of Swaledale, Bluefaced Leicester, Cheviot, Suffolk & Continental rams.

The sale commenced with the gimmer shearlings and ewes, this section met a flying trade for all classes, with many purchasers going home short of requirements. A top price of £180 was achieved on two occasions, firstly for a lovely pen of six Mule shearlings from Messrs T E Clarke, Howgill Castle, purchased by Messrs T W Fawcett, Little Blencowe Farm. This was followed later in the sale for a pen of Texel X Mule shearlings from Mr L J Cowper, Newbridge Farm, bought by Messrs Pearson, Manor Farm.

Ewe lambs sold to phenomenal rates, with huge demand for Mules, topping at £132 for a pen of twelve from Mr A Price, Bradley, going to Mr D W Mallinson, Lodge Farm.

Many more breeding females could have been sold with ease, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you still have some left to sell.

Tups peaked at £900 for a cracking pure Texel shearling from G Pyman, Park View. This price was closely followed at £700 on three separate occasions, firstly for two Suffolk shearlings from Messrs K, F M & C Johnson, Calees Cottage, and finally for a Pure Texel two shear from Messrs Lord, West Dowgill.

Tup lambs topped at £480 for a Suffolk, also coming from Calees Cottage.

A great entry of Cheviot tups was forward, topping at £550 from Mr D H Hogg, Melbourne House.
