Prime Sheep 270923

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,792 prime sheep, comprising of 2,469 prime lambs & 3,320 cast ewes & rams.

Another large show of prime lambs was forward with trade sharper across the board, meaty well-fed lambs were a joy to sell with an SQQ average of 270ppk being achieved. The sale topped at 369ppk for a fabulous single lamb, weighing 42kg from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, realising £155, this run of 40 lambs averaged £137.35/333.5ppk.

A top price per head of £160 was achieved for a great pair of 51kg Beltex lambs from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands, this consignment of 41 well-fed lambs sold to average 315ppk/£146.

Suffolks topped at £142 for a pen of 3 lambs from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot.

Cheviot Mule lambs soared to £120 for a pen of 8, weighing 51kg from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck.

Heavy lambs proved sharper on the week with Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, selling 175 to average £129/50kg.

All lambs sold averaged £117.75, £6 per head up on the year, the gap between fed and lean lambs continues to grow weekly.

Cast ewes and rams came forward in huge numbers again with all buyers present ensuring a very level trade from start to finish. Plenty of quality ewes were achieving in excess of £200, topping at £270 twice, firstly from Glenroyd Road, purchased by Pak Mecca and secondly from Holme House, purchased by Mr J Linsley.

A shortage of heavy ewes forward with Suffolks topping at £165 from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, purchased by Pak Mecca.

Mule ewes with weight still were still sought after, topping at £105 for a pen of 13 English Mules from Mr WR Wilson, South View.

Plenty more interest in the horned ewe section, topping at £95 for Scotch Blackface from Mr C Main, Eden Hall, many other pens £80 plus with Backmuir Livestock selling a pen of 25 to £84.

Cast rams topped at £190 for a Texel from Mr CW Donald, Lamonby House, purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.
