Prime Sheep 200923

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,374 prime sheep, comprising of 2,290 prime lambs & 3,084 cast ewes & rams.

An increased number of lambs were forward on the week, with vendors braving the terrible weather.
An SQQ sale average of 268ppk was achieved, with best Continental lambs continuing to sell very well. A total of 270 lambs sold in excess of 300ppk.
The sale topped at 351ppk for a great single Beltex X lamb from Martin & Angela Hall, Sunny Bank, weighing 37kg realising £130.
A top price per head of £152 was achieved for a pen of 6 Beltex lambs, weighing 52kg from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House.
Lambs weighing between 44kg-46kg proved by far the best commercial weight to sell, with heavier lambs showing more resistance on the week. Messrs TE Irving & Sons, East Cliff, sold a great pen of twenty-one, Suffolk lambs weighing 53kg, to realise £133.
Mule lambs sold to a top of £114 for a pen of 10 weighing 47kg from Messrs AG Morton, Bank Hall.
Over 3,000 ewes were sold once again, with all buyers present and forward, this ensured that all classes were competitively bid for.

The sale topped at £260 for a pair of Texel ewes from Holme House, bought by Pak Mecca Meats. This was closely followed at £250 for a Texel ewe from Messrs K Forrester & Son, Cobble Hall, purchased by Mr J Linsley.

Weight and quality were certainly very good to sell, regularly achieving £150 plus. Suffolks achieved over £150 on six separate occasions, topping at £172 from Glenroyd Road.

Mule ewes were still climbing over £100 per head, topping at £108 for a pen of seventeen from Backmuir Livestock, purchased by Mr A Dawson, this home also sold Cheviot-Mule ewes to £126. The best horned ewes were still selling in excess of £70 per head throughout the sale.

Rams were very easy to sell on the week, topping at £170 for a pen of Texel rams from Holme House.
