Prime Sheep 130923
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,497 prime sheep, comprising of 1,891 prime lambs & 2,606 cast ewes & rams.
Prime lamb trade was much sharper across the board, averages were up 17ppk on the week with an SQQ average of 279ppk being achieved. A great show of meaty lambs were on offer with a top price per kilo of 356ppk for a lovely single Beltex lamb from Messrs Hodgson, Woodfoot, weighing 41kg realising £146. This was closely followed at 354ppk from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, for their usual outstanding lambs, a pen of 9 Beltex weighing 41kg achieving £145, with another pen of 8 at 40kg realising £141/353ppk.
A top price per head of £158 was achieved for a pair of 60kg Suffolks from Glenroyd Road.
A pen of 10 cracking 44kg Continental lambs achieved £155 from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands.
Mule lambs sold to £114 for a pair weighing 50kg from Messrs Lord, West Dowgill. Messrs TE Clarke, Howgill Castle, sold a pen of 13 weighing 47kg to £110.
Another fantastic entry of ewes and rams was forward, the sale topped at £250 for a single Texel from Glenroyd Road, with leaner Continental and Suffolk ewes proving the easiest to sell.
Some great consignments were on offer with Messrs Dent, Elm House, selling 23 lovely Continental ewes to average £154.52. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, sold a run of 101 Texel X ewes to average £124, topping at £140.
Mule ewes topped at £120 from Mr GN Burne, Appleside Farm. Scotch Blackface ewes topped at £82 for a pen of 24 from Backmuir Livestock.
