Prime Sheep 060923

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,939 prime sheep, comprising of 1,926 prime lambs & 3,013 cast ewes & rams.

A larger show of prime lambs was forward with meat and the best export lambs continuing to sell with ease. The sale topped at 358ppk for a lovely pen of 7 Beltex lambs, weighing 38kg from Messrs B & DA Bousfield, Glaslyn House, realising £136.

A top price per head of £160 was achieved for a 60kg Continental lamb from Holme House. Suffolk lambs topped at £135 for 55kg from Tarn End. Mule lambs proved good to sell once again, topping at 245ppk for 42kg lambs from Messrs Lord, West Dowgill, realising £103.

Lambs weighing in excess of 44kg were favourable to sell today but meat continues to be key.

Ewe numbers came forward in strength once again with all buyers in attendance ensuring a competitive trade. Horned and plainer ewes held their value with others easier on the week.

Texel ewes topped at £270 from Mr A Straney, Glenroyd Road, purchased by Mr J Linsley. A shortage of Texel ewes on the week with more required on a regular basis as they could be sold with ease.

A ring full of 31 Scotch Blackface ewes achieved £82 from Backmuir Livestock, purchased by Pickstock Foods.

Suffolk ewes topped at £150 from Messrs Graham, Hallrigg. English Mules peaked at £120 from Messrs Somerville, Lansmere, purchased by Mr D Towers. A ring full of Park Cheviots achieved £145 from Mr D Mackenzie, Aberdeen.
