Prime Sheep 090823

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,565 prime sheep, comprising of 1,751 prime lambs & 2,814 cast ewes & rams.

Today we held our Annual Young Handlers Show, kindly sponsored by Penrith Agricultural Show & Lake District National Park, judging was in the capable hands of Mr F Jackson, Reagill Grange, who awarded the Inglewood Edge Trophy to Amy Wilson, Craggfoot, with her Texel X lamb. Reserve Champion honours went to Jamie Walton, Goodlie Hill Cottage, with his Beltex X lamb.

A far sharper trade was witnessed for all classes with a 15ppk rise on the week, an SQQ average of 287.5ppk was achieved. A top price per kilo of 390ppk was realised for a lovely Texel X lamb from Master Rueben Linsley, weighing 41kg, totalling £160.

Over 90 lambs sold in excess of 350ppk, topping at £170 on two occasions, firstly for the champion young handlers lamb, a 45kg Texel from Miss Amy Wilson, Craggfoot. Secondly for a lovely pen of 6 Texel X lambs, weighing 52kg from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm.

Messrs RW Sowerby & Sons, Sycamore Rise, sold a fabulous run of 90 lambs to average £146/328ppk for 44kgs.

Suffolk lambs topped at £165 for a single pure Suffolk tup, weighing 78kg from Tarn End.
Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey, sold a lovely pair, weighing 50kg to £153. Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, sold a consignment of 35 lambs to average 346ppk.

Ewe numbers still keep flying forward with quality and quantity on offer attracting a strong ring of buyers, both old and new. Heavy Continental and fat ewes were £20 per head dearer on the week, with many more required to fulfil demand. A total of sixty-two ewes sold in excess of £200 per head, topping at £290 for a pair of Texel ewes from Tarn End, selling to Mr J Linsley.

Suffolk X ewes from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm, topped at £205, selling to Mr D Kemp. This was closely followed at £205 from Mr C Abernethy, Aberdeen. Seventy Suffolk ewes in the sale averaged over £150.

Mule ewes were comfortably £10 per head dearer on the week, with all 440 in the sale averaging £97.82, topping at £140 for a pair from Messrs JJ & A Brough, Clappers Farm. A ring full of fifteen from Messrs R & A Slack, Cockley Bank, realised £137 per head, this consignment of 58 Mules averaged £118.95. Messrs J & JK Spedding, Salter Hall, Frizington, sold twenty-six to average £124.69.

Horned ewes with meat were very good to sell, topping at £92 for a pen of Swaledales from Messrs Ridley, Woodall.

A mention must go to Mr T Catto, Aberdeen, with a consignment of twenty young goats to average £109.50, topping at £136.

Cast Rams topped at £180 for Texels, with heavy tups regularly £150 plus.
