Prime Sheep 020823
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,263 prime sheep, comprising of 1,671 prime lambs & 2,592 cast ewes & rams.
A larger entry of prime lambs was forward with a brisk trade being achieved especially for the best quality Continental lambs, 171 lambs sold in excess of 300ppk and more could easily be sold to vendors’ advantage.
The sale topped at 358ppk for a lovely pen of 5 Beltex lambs, weighing 38kg from Mr WH Brass, Low Row, realising £136 purchased by Mr R Vivers. A top price per head of £160 was achieved for a 63kg Texel lamb from Tarn End, this was closely followed at £156 for a 50kg Continental lamb from Messrs G Jackson & Sons, Reagill Grange.
Mr WR Wilson, South View, sold a lovely pen of 13 Suffolk lambs, weighing 53kg to £144. Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey, sold 49kg Suffolk lambs to 288ppk/£141. Messrs Clubbs, Old Wall, sold a lovely first run of Texel lambs to average £139/48kg, with weight continuing to attract firm interest.
Penrith cast ewes light up the ring with a furious trade and an average of £108.80 being achieved, amazing for the first week in August up £11.67 on the year, all classes throughout the day would be £4-£7 per head sharper.
The sale topped at £280 for a Texel ewe from Tarn End, purchased by Mr J Linsley, with all Texels selling to average £156.62.
Heavy, fat ewes were way short of buyers’ requirements, a strange statement for August but many more are required for next week. A pen of 3 pure Suffolk ewes achieved £180 from Backmuir Livestock, purchased by Mr A Dawson. English Mules topped at £133 from Messrs N & AM Brough & Son, Cotland, Dumfries. A consignment of 41 Suffolk cross ewes from Messrs A & MJ Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall, averaged £149.49, topping at £175.
Horned ewes were a sharper trade with Messrs Marston, Millstone Moor, selling Swaledales to £95, purchased by Pickstock Foods.
