Prime Sheep 260723

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,915 prime sheep, comprising of 1,334 prime lambs & 2,581 cast ewes & rams.

Another good entry was forward with a far sharper trade witnessed than first predicted, averaging 271ppk/£118.20. The sale topped at 388ppk for a lovely pair of Texel lambs, weighing 41kg from Messrs J Stalker, Ratten Castle, realising £159 purchased by Cranstons Butchers.

A top price per head of £162 was achieved for a pen of 5 Texel lambs, weighing 59kg from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, with this home selling a run of 79 lambs to average £144.

Weight continues to fly, with lambs weighing over 47kg especially sought after. Suffolk lambs topped at £155 for a pair weighing 58kg from Mr R Milne, Parkdargue. Messrs WR Wilson, South View, sold a lovely packet of 24 lambs, weighing 49kg to £140 per head.

Mule lambs topped at £104 for a pen of 11, weighing 42kg from Messrs WM & C Wallace, Gap Shield.

Numbers rise further in the cast ewe ring, with the average dropping slightly on the week being a reflection of the quantity of horned ewes on offer, the trade for both Continental and Mule ewes held up exceptionally well.

The sale topped at £292 for a pair of Texel ewes from Tarn End, purchased by Mr J Linsley. A pair of Texel rams topped at £200 from Shethin Farm, Aberdeen.

Mule ewes matched last week’s trade especially the heavier, fatter classes. Topping at £124 for English Mules from Messrs J & JK Spedding, Salter Hall, Workington. Messrs W & HI Watson, Sanders Close, Slaggyford, sold a pen of four Bluefaced Leicester ewes to £148.

A superb consignment of 92 Charollais ewes averaged £138.21 from Holme House, topping at £185 for a pen of 14, purchased by Mr D Kemp.

The plainest horned ewes would be easier on the week, but meat topped at £102 for Jacobs from Backmuir Livestock. Swaledales topped at £86 for a pen of 11 from Messrs S Allan & Sons, Greenhow.
