Prime Sheep 190723
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,498 prime sheep, comprising of 1,208 prime lambs, 179 prime hoggs & 2,111 cast ewes & rams.
A slightly larger entry of prime lambs were forward achieving at SQQ average of 277ppk, seeing a 5ppk rise on the week. The sale topped at 373ppk for a fantastic pen of 19 Beltex lambs, weighing 40kg from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, with this home selling a consignment of 50 to average £138/41kg.
A top price per head of £161 was achieved for a cracking single lamb, weighing 45kg from Mr M Strong, Hewer Hill Cottage, with this home selling 7 to average £146.
Suffolk lambs topped at £144 for a pen of 4, weighing 52kg from Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagill House. Messrs RB Jackson, Papcastle, sold a pen of 4 Suffolk lambs to 298ppk for 45kg.
Once again Penrith leads the way in the cast section with an average of £102.09 being achieved, topping at £285 for a single Texel ewe from Holme House, purchased by James Linsley. Numerous pens of Texels sold in excess of £200 with Messrs BS & J Strong & Son, Hewer Hill, selling 20 to average £211.90. Messrs JA & FL Brownrigg, The Croft, sold a pair of Texel ewes for £280 per head.
English Mules topped at £124 from Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagill House, purchased by Mr A Dawson. A strong pen of Swaledale ewes from Messrs Marston, Millstone Moor, achieved £99. A pair of billy goats topped at £112 from Mr T Catto, Little Kirkhill, making the journey from Aberdeen well worthwhile.
