Prime Sheep 120723
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,207 prime sheep, comprising of 1,163 prime lambs, 315 prime hoggs & 1,729 cast ewes & rams.
A similar show of numbers was forward with the best quality types short of buyers’ requirements. The sale topped at 351ppk for a lovely pair of Beltex lambs, weighing 37kg from Mr WH Brass, Low Row, realising £130. A top price per head of £157 was achieved for a pen of 6 lovely Texel lambs, weighing 48kg from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm.
Heavy lambs and the best Continental lambs continue to sell with ease, more resistance is being seen for leaner types.
Suffolk lambs topped at 288ppk for a pen of 9, weighing 43kg from Messrs RB Jackson, Croft House, realising £124. A 54kg Suffolk lamb achieved £141 from P & L Murray, Ellonby Hall.
The second week of July and 315 hoggs were forward with meat and weight being very good to sell, Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagill House, sold Suffolk X Mules to £150, purchased by S&S Meats. Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg, sold a run of 33 Scotch Blackface & Continental hoggs to average £132. A pen of 37kg Continental hoggs achieved £98 from Messrs CL & ME Howe, Newby.
As numbers start to come forward once again in the ewe section the sale still averaged a hefty £112.36, topping at £250 for a Texel ewe from Holme House. Buyers were all keen to purchase and demand for heavy, fat ewes was very strong with Mules selling with ease. A pen of 16 Scotch Mules achieved £127 from Backmuir Livestock, purchased by Mr A Dawson. Messrs Lord, Hewgill House, sold a ring full of Bluefaced Leicester ewes to £152. Cast rams topped at £160 for a pen of 6 Lleyn X Texels from Greenacres, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
