Prime Sheep 120423
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,171 prime sheep, comprising of 1,828 prime hoggs & 2,343 cast ewes & rams.
A blistering sale from start to finish with numbers looking to be tightening.
A whole sale average of 310ppk was achieved with an SQQ average of 325ppk. The sale topped at £190/463ppk for a Beltex X from Messrs Holliday & Graham, Bolton Wood Lane. All classes of sheep were far sharper on the week with the best lambs very short of buyer’s requirements and easily realising in excess of 400ppk.
Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green, sold a beautiful run of 90 hoggs to average 45kg/393ppk/£177.89. Heavy hoggs sold to a great trade with the best heavy continental hoggs achieving £175 plus.
Suffolks topped at £170 for a pen of 12 from Messrs TE Irving & Sons, East Cliff.
Messrs RJS & DM Addison, Greystone House sold a pen of 22 Scotch Blackface hoggs, weighing 49kg to £149. Scotch Blackface hoggs are in high demand with Messrs J Carrick & Sons, Ireshope Plains, selling 2 pens of 14, weighing 43kgs to £142 or 330ppk.
Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House sold a pen of 10 Swaledales, weighing 47kg/£129.
Finally, a real boom bonanza in the ewe section with a sale average of £137.20 being achieved, up £39 on the week, with 93 selling in excess of £200 ahead.
The sale topped at £310 ahead for a pen of 6 from Lee McNally, Jonesborough, selling to Mr James Linsley. The same home selling a ring full of 10 tups to £200 to Yorkshire Halal with all rams forward, averaging £153.68.
Plenty of heavy ewes £170-£180 ahead and along way short of buyer’s requirements, with Suffolks topping at £200 ahead from Mr J Clark, Northern Ireland with all sold averaging £155.73.
Charollais ewes hit the spot with all sold averaging £187.72, topping at £235 for a pen of 3 and also a pen of 10.
240 Mule ewes forward averaged £128.25 topping at £142 for a pen of 6 from Messrs Harrington, Wellington Farm, Aspatria and Mr P Baker, Lincolnshire selling 19 to £142, purchased by Mr A Dawson.
Horned ewes fell way short of buyers’ requirements with Swaledales average £87.03 topping at £113 for a pen of 15 from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside and Messrs I & C L Richardson, Greenlands selling 7 Herdwicks to £100 ahead.
