Prime Sheep - 05.04.23

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,765 prime sheep, comprising of 2,576 prime hoggs & 2,189 cast ewes & rams.

A larger show of prime hoggs was forward at our weekly sale, with meaty well finished hoggs again dearer on the week.

The sale topped at 393ppk on two occasions for great Beltex lambs. Firstly, from Messrs Savage, Petteril Green for a pen of 7, weighing 42kg and realising £165. Secondly for a pen of 4, from Messrs Ridley, Ranbeck for the same weight and price, this home also topped at £169 for 3, weighing 45kg.

Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside sold a great run of 29 Beltex lambs to average 42kg/372ppk/£158.68. Messrs Savage, Petteril Green sold a run of £106 Continental Hoggs to average 46.9kg /327ppk/£153.65.

Heavy hoggs continue to sell well with Messrs Nevinson, High House selling his run of 22, weighing 57kg to average £157.

Messrs McLaren had a great run of 350 heavy hoggs forward, to average £150.56.

Blackfaced hoggs were in high demand topping at £137 for a pen of 15, weighing 47kg from Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall. Blackfaced Hoggs achieved a top price PPK of 302ppk for 15, at 42kg realising £127 from Messrs Carrick, Ireshope Plains.

A sharper trade for all classes of ewes, with leaner types taking a sharp lift on the week. Topping today’s sale at £310 for a fantastic single Texel Ewe from Messrs Graham, Hallrigg, this home also sold a pen of 3 at £292, best pure-bred ewes still continue to fly weekly. Cheviot Ewes topped at £138 for 2 from Messrs Wilson, Meadow Farm. Hallbankgate Farms sold 2 lovely Blackface Ewes to £96.

Swaledale Ewes topped at £89 for a pen of 7 from Messrs Ridley, Woodhall. Rams topped at £245 for a brilliant Texel tup from Holme House.
