Prime Sheep Report 290323

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,211 prime sheep, comprising of 2,289 prime hoggs & 1,936 cast ewes & rams.

Week on week trade continues to rise for all classes of sheep. A blistering trade was had today, with an overall sale average of 279p/kg (£126.50), and an SQQ of 294p/kg.

Topping today’s sale at £165 (402p/kg) was a pen of five fantastic Beltex hoggs from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, with the same home also selling two pens at £163. Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, sold a great run of 38 hoggs to average 340p/kg (£146), topping at 397p/kg (£155) for a pen of seven weighing 39kg.

Heavy hoggs were the dearest trade seen for some weeks, with Messrs JG & RW Nevinson & Son, High House Farm sold a run of twenty-two hoggs to average £148 for 52kg. Some great runs of Suffolk hoggs were forward, topping at £159 for a pen of seven weighing 62kg. Messrs TE Irving & Sons, East Cliff, sold a pen of twenty Suffolks, weighing 52kg for £144 per head. Mules topped at £133 for a pen of 21 weighing 50kg from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House.

Hoggs today weighing in the range of 47-49kg were in high demand, with Texel Mule & Suffolk Mule hoggs selling between £127-£135.

Some great hill-bred sheep were on offer, with demand high for these types. Blackfaced hoggs topped at £132 for a pen of eighteen, weighing 50kg, from Messrs RJS & DM Addison, Greystone House. A top price per kilo of 279p/kg for a run of forty-three from Messrs J Carrick & Sons, Irishope Plains. Swaledales sold to £126 for twelve weighing 65kg from Messrs W Richardson & Son, Ghyll House. Herdwicks topped at £146 for a single weighing 59kg from Mr G Bland, Clea Hall. Messrs AD & T Harrison, Brotherilkeld sold pen of twenty-three Herdwick gimmer hoggs, weighing 38kg to 287p/kg (£109).

In the cast ewe section, an overall average of £110.76 was achieved. Topping at £280 from Holme House with a pair of Texels, purchased by Mr J Linsley.
Plenty of ewes are still selling in excess of £200 and also short of buyers’ requirements. Weight was still good to sell, with Mules topping at £136 from Messrs Ivinson, Plumpton Foot.
Horned ewes met a mighty good trade and long way short of buyer’s requirements. Messrs Lowis, Waterside House sold Swaledales to a top of £81 and Herdwicks to £79, for a pen of 9 from Mr S Thomas, Kemplee Farm.
