Prime Sheep 150223
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,633 prime sheep, comprising of 2,598 prime hoggs & 2,035 cast ewes & rams.
Another good entry of hoggs was forward to our weekly sale with trade being sharper again on the week, an overall average of 240ppk was achieved with the SQQ being 254ppk.
The best Continental and Beltex hoggs were stronger again, topping at 365ppk for a pen of five 43kg Beltex’s realising £157 from Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green, with this run of hoggs averaging £138/312ppk. Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, sold a single Beltex hogg, weighing 43kg to £155/360ppk.
A top price per head of £172 was achieved for a brilliant 80kg Suffolk hogg from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot. Some great consignments of big hoggs were on offer with Messrs JG & RW Nevinson & Son, High House Farm, selling 13 Texels to average £159. First-time consignor Messrs W Murray & Sons, Prior House, sold a great run of Continental hoggs to average £141.
Mule hoggs topped at £130 for a single weighing 60kg from Messrs WJ Whitfield, Pennine View. All Mules sold very well with Messrs EJ Ivinson & Sons, Skelling Farm, selling 60 to average £122 for 55kg, topping at £126 for a pen of 20.
Most definitely the dearest trade seen for a long time with all firms keen to purchase. Texel ewes topped at £290 from Tarn End Farm, purchased by Mr J Linsley. Most classes would be comfortably up £8-£10 per head, with a sale average of £107.34 being achieved. Beltex ewes led the averages at £151.34, topping at £210 from Witton Farms, Angus, purchased by Mr J Linsley.
Suffolk ewes achieved some serious returns with all selling to average £128.88, topping at £155 from Holme House, purchased by Mr W Shearer, with numerous pens of heavy ewes £140-£150.
A ring full of 20 English Mules achieved £115 from Messrs D Burne, Town End, with a shortage of heavy, fat ewes forward.
Very few hill ewes were forward with orders being left short, with Scotch Blackfaces topping at £91 from Greenacres.
Cast rams also saw a rise across the board, topping at £180 for a pen of 7 from Holme House, purchased by Mr D Kemp.
