Prime Sheep 080223
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,640 prime sheep, comprising of 2,511 prime hoggs & 2,129 cast ewes & rams.
Following the national trend, well-finished hoggs continue to sell very well with a sharper trade across the board this week. An SQQ average of 254ppk was achieved, 240ppk overall, £111 per head. Some great runs of hoggs were on offer, a credit to our regular customers.
The sale topped at 344ppk for a pair of great 41kg Texel hoggs from Messrs R Allinson & Sons, Windy Gate, realising £141, purchased by Vivers Scotlamb.
A top price per head of £145 was achieved for a pair of 75kg Texel hoggs from Messrs JG & RW Nevinson & Son, High House Farm, with this run of 19 hoggs averaging £135.16
Weight in Penrith continues to prove popular, Mule hoggs from Messrs HM & R Ivinson & Sons, Hole House, selling a pen of twenty at 59kg to £130, purchased by Mr Neil Lomax. Messrs PD Hird, Broomhills, sold a pen of 23 Suffolk hoggs, weighing 59kg to £137, purchased by Mr J Linsley.
Export-weight hoggs saw an increase in demand with 38-42kgs seeing very good returns.
Cast ewes and rams met a very fast trade with customers keen to purchase all classes across the board. The sale topped at a new market record of £355 for a Continental ewe from first-time customer JW Gibb, Toftcombs Farm, Biggar, with this consignment of 13 averaging £225.38.
A consignment of 13 Texel ewes from Gate Farm averaged £235, topping at £270 for a single ewe purchased by Mr J Linsley. A shortage of pure Texel ewes was forward with more needed to fulfil demand.
The whole sale averaged £98.93 with most classes being £5-£10 per head up on the week.
A total of 291 Mule ewes were forward to average £92.43 with this section seeing the largest lift, topping at £123 for a pen of eight from Messrs JJ & A Brough, Clappers, purchased by Mr A Dawson. A consignment of 44 Scotch Mule ewes averaged £103.07 from Mr S Lawson, Huntly Lodge Farm.
Cast rams topped at £190 for a Suffolk X Texel from Messrs T Carrick & Son, High Crossgill, purchased by Pickstock Foods.
