On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their opening sale of 2023, with 156 Rearing Calves and Stirks forward.
The sale topped at £710 for a cracking ten-month-old Limousin bull stirk from Messrs Mattocks, Auldby Farm, purchased by Mr R Blenkharn, this home also sold a lovely packet of 11 pure Friesian bulls to £450 per head, purchased by Mr C Maclennan.
Messrs A & A Little, Hollands, sold a lovely run of six-month-old British Blue stirks to average £570. These quality stirks were forward to a far larger crowd of eager buyers and many more could have been sold.
Calves with quality and size continue to grow in popularity with the stronger end achieving a flying trade. The calf section topped at £440 on two occasions, firstly for a lovely 8-week-old British Blue bull from Turnbull Farming, Monks House, and secondly for a fantastic British Blue bull from Messrs M & K Palmer, Grange Farm, with this home selling three to average £430.
Heifer calves topped at £400 for a great Limousin from Mr DW Mallinson, Lodge Farm, with this run of six averaging £372. Black & White calves with strength were the dearest seen for some time, topping at £200 for a brilliant pure Friesian from Messrs RW & AJ Jackson, Clarks Farm.
