On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their opening sale of 4,238 prime sheep, comprising of 2,677 prime hoggs & 1,561 cast ewes & rams.

Although there was a downward trend across the country, the trade started to bounce back here in Penrith. An SQQ average of 252p/kg was achieved, topping at 348p/kg for a pen of 40kg Beltex X Texel hoggs from Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, totalling £139, selling to Vivers Scotlamb. This consignment of 43 hoggs averaged 332p/kg (£131.19).

Weight sold very well, with well-fed hoggs achieving strong, premium prices. The sale topped at £157 for a pen of 75kg Texel X Mule hoggs from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, selling to Mr R Skelton. Texel tup lambs, weighing 73kg realised £150 from MG Gall, Aberdeen, selling to Farmers Fresh.

Mule hoggs topped at £121 for 51kg Scotch Mules from Greenacres Farm. Cheviot-Mules weighing 49kg for a pen of sixteen sold to £120 (245p/kg) from Messrs RJ & JM Ridley, Ranbeck.

A ring full of Texel X Mule hoggs weighing 53kg totalled £133 (251p/kg) from Messrs JJ Henderson & Son, Park House, bought by Mr M Lomax.

The smallest show of cast ewes seen here for many months was witnessed today, with all classes sharper, especially the horned ewes & Mules. A total of twelve, strong active buyers were present.

The sale topped at £280 for a superb pure-bred Texel ewe from Mr G Pyman, Park View, selling to Pak Mecca Meats. Numerous ewes sold for £200 plus, with this type a long way short of buyers demand.

A ring full of twenty Scotch Mule ewes achieved £126 from Backmuir Livestock, selling to Mr A Dawson.

Horned ewes would see a lift of £4-£8 per head in places, with Messrs TA & A Dickinson, North Netherscales, selling 16 Herdwicks to £82 a head. This consignment of 45 averaged £70.87.

Swale ewes topped at £95 from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House, this home also had a pen of Swales at £85. Mr D Raine, Old Parks, also achieved £85 for his pen of eight Swaledale ewes.
