Prime Sheep 281222

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,051 prime sheep, comprising 3,001 prime lambs & 2,050 cast ewes and rams.

A huge entry of prime lambs was forward with an SQQ average of 263ppk being achieved. Topping at 337ppk was Mr JR Weir, Thorneythwaite with a pen of 7 excellent Beltex lambs, weighing 43kgs and totalling £145, selling to Mr M Bowe. Messrs Gardner, Glebelands also achieved 337ppk with a pen of 41kgs totalling £138, selling to Yorkshire Halal.

Heavy lambs achieved a very fast trade, regularly 250-260ppk, topping at 281ppk for a pen of 47kg Suffolk x Texel’s totalling £132 from Auchengray Farms, selling to Mr M Bowe.

71kg Texel X lambs from Messrs Sowerby, Sycamore Rise achieved £160, selling to J Linsley.

A ring full of Suffolk X Mule lambs weighing 53kgs achieved £145 (274ppk) from Messrs PD Hird, Broomhill.

Excellent, well-fed mule lambs weighing 53kgs achieved £130 from Messrs Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill and selling to Mr N Lomax.

A run of 53 Suffolk and Texel X Mules in great order achieved £135.58 (261ppk/52kgs).

Cast ewes and rams met a very similar trade with all classes well bid for, topping at £295 twice for Texels from Mr W Morison, South Bogbain selling to Mr James Linsley, and from Tarn End, selling to Mr W Shearer.

Heavy ewes topped at £170 for a pair of Suffolks from Backmuir Livestock selling to Pak Mecca Meats, with the same home selling Cheviot Mules to £146 and a pen of 14 Scotch Mules at £122.

Hill ewes topped at £75 a head for a pen of 10 Herdwicks from Mr R Weir, Chapel Farm.
