Prime Sheep - 21.12.22

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,684 prime sheep, comprising 3,197 prime lambs & 2,487 cast ewes and rams.

Another fantastic entry of sheep was forward with 3,197 lambs on offer with eager interest from all buyers keen for sheep. An SQQ sale average of 275ppk was achieved (£121 per head/266ppk overall).

Topping today’s sale at 356ppk (£139) was a single Beltex lamb from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands, weighing 39kgs. Closely followed at 355ppk for a pen of 8 Continental lambs at 40kg/£142 purchased by Mr R Vivers. Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall had a cracking run of 47 lambs that sold to average 348.73ppk (£140.38). Top price per head on the day was £163 for a single 59kg Texel lamb from Stewart Lane.

Messrs WR Wilson, South View, sold a great run of Suffolk lambs which topped at £157 for a pen of 14, weighing 60kg. This run of 32 sold to average £153. Weight remains exceptionally good to sell, with Messrs Henderson, Park House Farm selling 96 first cross lambs to average £142.51 for 52kg.

Mules sold to a top of £133 for a pen of 19, weighing 52kg from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House.

A very strong demand for cast ewes once again, with all customers exceptionally keen to purchase and all orders strong around the ring.

The sale topped at £280 from young Texel ewe from Mr J Bland, Clea Hall, purchased by Mr J Linsley.

A total of 79 ewes sold in excess of £200 with Messrs T L J Airey, New Grange Farm soldselling a consignment of 30 to average £201.67. First time vendors, Messrs R L & A Philips, Fir Tree Farm, sold a super run of 75 Beltex X Ewesewes to average £183.79, including a pen of 10 at £225, and topping at £270.

Heavy Suffolk’s regularly sold for £150 plus, topping at £166 for a pen of 3 from Backmuir Livestock.

Horned ewes sold to a much sharper trade with Mr R Weir, Chapel Farm selling 48, selling 48 Herdwicks to a top of £73 purchased by Pickstocks, bought by Pickstock Foods. Swaledales topped at £80 aheada head from Messrs Jenkinson, Lower Gate.

Cast Rams topped at £170 twice, firstly for Texels from Greenacres and secondly Texels from Messrs I S & C A Harrington, Salkeld Road.
