On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Christmas Show & Sale of 137 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
Another good show of well reared calves and stirks was on offer, today’s sale also included our Christmas calf show which was kindly judged by Mr K Hunt, Ivegill. The champion honours were awarded to a lovely five-month-old Limousin heifer from Messrs CM & CS Chappelhow, High Grounds, selling for £560, purchased by Mr D Holgate.

Calves sold to great rates again with trade on a steady rise over the last couple of weeks, The calf section was topped by a lovely British Blue bull calf, receiving 1st place in the show, from Mr R Wallace, Macherquhat Farm, achieving £440, purchased by Mr D Holgate. This home also topped the heifer section at £310 for a pen of 3 British Blues, purchased by Mr C Maclennan.
Stirks saw a sharp increase with demand for reared cattle extremely high. Topping todays sale at £640 for three lovely 9 month old Simmental bullocks from M/s Harrison, Mount Clifton. With others from the same farming at £590 & £580. Mr B Hogg, Cairnbridge sold his Blue bullocks to £630 and heifers to £570.
