Prime Sheep - 07.12.22

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,808 prime sheep, comprising of 3,158 prime lambs & 2,708 cast ewes and rams.

Penrith & District Farmers Mart held their annual Christmas Prime Show, kindly sponsored by W M Armstrong Haulage, Longtown. Judging was in the very capable hands of Mr Michael Bowe. Champion honours were awarded to the first prize pen of Beltex lambs from M/s Hall, Inglewood Edge. These 5 exquisitely presented and well-dressed lambs were outstandingly fleshed weighing 52kg, and later sold for the top price of the day of £200 (385ppk). Reserve Champion honours came from the same home for the first prize pen of Texel Lambs weighing 46kg and later selling for £160 (348ppk).

Again in Penrith another great show of stock entered the market with a large show of 3158 lambs forward selling to average 254.88sqq, 250ppk overall. With 355 lambs selling in excess of 300ppk. Topping the days sale on 2 occasions at 385ppk were the Champion lambs from M/s Hall, Inglewood Edge for 52kg (£200) purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn. Secondly for the 2nd prize Beltex show lambs from M/s Gardner, Glebelands weighing 39kg selling to £150 being purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.

Weight still remains in high demand with the heavy lambs 50kg plus giving the best returns. M/s Hird, Broomhills sold 20 Suffolk lambs to average £136.00 with M/s Henderson, Park House selling 97 lambs to average £134.44.

M/s Clarke, Howgill Castle excellently well finished Mule lambs topping at £133 or 246ppk with Cheviot Mules topped at £127 from M/s Todd, Crosby Hall.

PDFM weekly show of Cast Ewes and Rams had another large show of Sheep with 2708 forward. With the whole sale averaging £89.44. Ewes sold to a top £300 on 2 occasions. Firstly, for a cracking Pure Texel Ewe from M/s Graham, Hallrigg. Secondly for another Pure Texel from Holme House once again those best Continental ewes selling easily in excess of £200 with 110 ewes surpassing this figure. Mules topped at £125 for a pen of 7 from Backmuir. With the same home selling Cheviot ewes to £113 for 15. Meaty horned ewes topped at £90 for a pen of 26 from Lane End.

A smaller offering of Cast Tups on offer topping todays trade at £220 for a Texel x from Harot Hill Farm.
