On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,712 prime sheep, comprising of 2,967 prime lambs & 2,745 cast ewes and rams.
Numbers just keep coming forward with every pen full in the market a reflection of the popularity of our sale with such a healthy ring side of buyers. With several new vendors making a presence.
The market averaged 262ppk/sqq up 6ppk on the week and 46 pens making in excess of 300ppk topping at 346ppk on 2 occasions. Firstly, from Messrs Gribbon, Waterside with a pen of 39kgs totalling £135 selling to Vivers Scotlamb.
Secondly from Messrs A J & F M Harrison, Grange Hall with 39kg Beltex X Texel Lambs totalling £135 purchased by Mr M Bowe with this consignment averaging 314ppk.
The whole sale averaged £115.85. Topping at £157 for 61kg Texel x Mule lambs (257ppk) from M/s R W Sowerby, Sycamore Rise purchased by Mr James Linsley.
Heavy lambs averaged a hefty 248ppk, with Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son selling a consignment of 51kg Texel x lambs totalling £138.82 (266ppk). Topping at £153 for 59kg’s.
Messrs T E Irving & Sons, East Cliffe still managed to achieve a blistering average of 260ppk / £137.91 topping at £143 for a pen of 20, 54kg’s (265ppk) purchased by Mr N Lomax.
M/s Bland & Barnes, Knott Houses sold a pen of clipped Texel x Herdwick lambs weighing 35kgs, £93 (266ppk) purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
Mules topped at 246ppk from Messrs Elliott Bros, Harbour Flatt with a pen of 50kg’s totalling £123 and 46kg’s totalling £112.
Our cast ewe ring once again just keeps on cruising with prices not seen like it anywhere else. A total of 42 sold in excess of £200 to top at £310. From Holme House being purchased by PAK Mecca Meats LTD.
The whole sale averaged £102.04 for all sold with 12 active buyers around the ring. A pen of 20 Suffolk x Texel ewes achieved £158 from Holme Farm. All Suffolk’s sold averaging £131.68.
Meat sold exceptionally well with the best horned ewes breaking the £100 barrier with Backmuir Livestock selling Scotties to £103 and all sold averaging £72.89 the same home sold Scotch Mules to £120, with a pen of 20 purchased by Mr W Shearer.
Plenty of Cheviot ewes £100 - £115 today with many more required to fulfil demand. Strong rams sold in excess of £150 regular topping at £170 for Texel’s.
