Prime Sheep - 02.11.22

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,167 prime sheep, comprising of 2,228 prime lambs & 2,941 cast ewes and rams.

A surprise was definitely had in the prime lamb ring with a sharp turn around in trade, an SQQ average of 265ppk was achieved, up 28ppk on the week with 36 pens selling in excess of 300ppk. The sale topped at 366ppk for a pen of 41kg Texel X Beltex lambs from Messrs Hodgson, Woodfoot, realising £150 purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn, with this consignment averaging £140/318ppk. This home also sold a pen of 7, weighing 44kg to £155, purchased by Mr M Bowe.

A consignment of 36 Beltex X Texel lambs from Messrs W Gribbon, Waterside Farm, averaged £133.36/322ppk.

Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagil House, sold a consignment of 80 Suffolk X Mule lambs to average a staggering £127/236ppk, topping at £134 for a pen of twenty, weighing 54kg (248ppk).

A pen of Mule lambs weighing 44kg achieved £105/239ppk from Messrs Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill.

Messrs TE Irving & Son, East Cliff, sold a consignment of 52 well-finished Suffolk X & Texel X Mule lambs to average £132.33/248ppk for 53kg, this home also sold 52kg Texel X lambs to £143.

Cast ewes and rams started to see a slight rise especially the better end and the heavier type. Over 15 lots sold in excess of £200 and a new market record been achieved topping at £330 from Holme House.

A pen of Suffolk ewes from Backmuir Livestock achieved £150 purchased by Mr W Shearer with all sold averaging £121.36.

A pen of 14 English Mules from M/s T F & G L Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm achieving £118 purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Swaledale ewes topped at £76 for a pen of Swales from M/s Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill also been purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Strong tups sold exceptionally well, topping at £170 and a pen of 4 achieving £165 from Greenacres Garth purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
