Prime Sheep 140922

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,323 prime sheep, comprising of 1,859 prime lambs & 2,464 cast ewes and rams.

Penrith once again comes out on top with an SQQ average of 262ppk. A top price of 330p/kg was achieved by Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, for a pair of 47kg lambs totalling £155 per head, selling to Mr R Skelton.

Messrs Lowis, Galloper Park, achieved a top average of 320p/kg (£127.60) for 39.5kg.

Weight sold exceptionally well all day, with the whole sale averaging £116.47, topping at £159 for 59kg Texel cross lambs from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, selling to Mr N Lomax.

A consignment of 90 mainly Texel cross Mules from Messrs M Bell & Son, Langton Field, averaged £131.33 (256p/kg) for 51kg.

First time prime lamb vendor Messrs RG & AY Armstrong, Terrace Farm, averaged £138 (275p/kg) for 50kg lambs, topping at £154 for 57kg.

Suffolk cross Mule lambs, weighing 52kg achieved £137 (263p/kg) from Messrs Coulston, Hole House, selling to Mr N Lomax.

2464 Ewes went under the hammer and achieved a sale average of £100.86, topping at £290 per head for a Texel ewe, from Plantation View, County Durham, purchased by Mr W Shearer. Backmuir Livestock achieved £285 for a Texel, purchased by Mr J Linsley.

A mighty Texel x Bluefaced Leicester ram achieved £210 from Mr S Lawson, Huntly Lodge, purchased by Mr J Linsley.

Plenty of pens of ewes achieved £150 plus, with extra demand around the ring. Suffolk x Texel ewes topped at £160.

Numerous pens of strong Swaledale realised £70-£77, with a pen of 10 from Mr WJ Wilson, Gill Head, achieving £77 purchased by Mr R Skelton. Messrs AD & T Harrison, Brotherilkeld, achieved £71 for a pen of 20 Herdwick ewes.

Vendors were very pleased with their returns once again, with many passing vendors expectations.
