Prime Sheep - 31.08.22

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3962 prime sheep, comprising of 1,659 prime lambs & 2,303 cast ewes and rams.

A marvellous entry of well-bred and well-presented lambs, averaged 249ppk SQQ. Quality took a sharp rise, with Penrith mart prices leading in front once again, with M/s R G Todd, Crosby Hall topping at 315ppk, for a pen of Beltex x Texel lambs totalling £126 purchased by Mr R Vivers.

Topping the averages went to M/s Lowis, Galloper Park, with a consignment 52 Beltex x Texel lamb to average 39.5kgs (£118.50 / 300ppk).

Closely followed by first time vender’s M/s Crozier & Langcake, High Moss with a run of 49 Texel x Beltex lambs weighing 41.5kg’s (£123 ahead / 295ppk).

Weight sold exceptionally well with M/s R & A Cullen, Cross Hills, selling 61kg Texel x Mule lambs to £151 purchased by Mr N Lomax.

M/s P D Hird, Broomhills topped the Suffolk section at £144 for 58kg’s and 50kg’s achieving 256ppk / £128.

Cast Ewes and Rams held a fast boyant trade, with several regularly reaching over £200 with a top of £220 from M/s J M & S M Priestley, Cracrop Farm, purchased by Mr D Towers.

A sale average of £98.22 was achieved up £4 on the week, heavy fat ewes sold well with plenty of orders around the ring, with English Mules reaching £130 from M/s Dickinson, High House and Mr A E Armstrong selling Bluefaced Leicester to £169 and averaging £143.62.

Horned ewes with flesh still sold well with a pen of 17 from Backmuir Livestock achieving £88 ahead purchased by Pickstock Foods.

Cast Rams sold to a fast trade with Mr M Farrell, Low Moor selling a pair of Dutch Spotted Shearlings to £175!!
