Prime sheep 240822
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,918 prime sheep, comprising of 1,522 prime lambs & 2,396 cast ewes and rams.
Prime lambs kept up with last week’s level with a SQQ of 253ppk being achieved. The sale topped at 317ppk from Messrs RG Todd, Crosby Hall with a pen of 41kg’s totalling £130, selling to Mr M Bowe.
A consignment of 25 first draw Texel x Beltex lambs from Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall achieved an average of 299ppk/£122.56 (41kg’s).
A large consignment of 83 Texel x Beltex lambs from Messrs J & HD Langcake, Sandhills averaged 300ppk/£126 (42kg’s).
Heavy lambs achieved a very sharp trade with all sold over 50kg’s averaging 250ppk. Topping at £148 ahead were Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge with a pen of 55kg’s selling to Mr N Lomax. Also selling to Mr N Lomax were a ring full of 54kg Suffolk x Mules from Messrs PD Hird, Broomhill, totalling £138 (256ppk).
Cast ewes continue to come forward in strong numbers with flesh and weight being in short supply. The sale topped at £216 for a pair of Texel’s from Mr J Bland, Clea Hall selling to Mr W Shearer.
Messrs Wales, Thackwood topped the Charollais section at £210 a head and Suffolk’s from Holme Farm topped at £208.
The best of the Mules sold to £138 from Messrs JJ & A Brough, Clappers Farm.
Horned ewes with flesh sold with ease with Messrs Fleming and Wilson, Low Mill topping at £80 for 11 Swaledales.
