Prime Sheep 170822

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,334 prime sheep, comprising of 1,254 prime lambs & 2,080 cast ewes and rams.

A much sharper trade was witnessed than ever expected on the day, with a sale average of 251p/kg topping at 334p/kg (£137) for a pen of 41kg Texel X Beltex lambs from Messrs WH Brass, Low Row, selling to Yorkshire Halal. This consignment of 50 sheep averaged £120.36 300p/kg for 40kg.

A superb consignment of Texel X Beltex lambs from Messrs Lowis, Galloper Park, averaged £119.32 (300p/kg) for 39kg, topping at 333p/kg (£130) for 39kg.

First draw Texel X Mule lambs from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House, averaged 265p/kg (£128) for 48kg, topping at £146 for 53kg.

Messrs DW Canon & Son, Low Abbey, sold a consignment of excellent well-fed Suffolk X Mule lambs to £127 (249p/kg) for 51kg, purchased by Mr N Lomax.

Cast ewes still came forward in strong numbers, with weight and meat in short supply. This section of the sale topped at £220 per head for a pen of Texel ewes from Holme House, selling to Mr W Shearer.

Mules topped at £137 from Messrs JG and RW Nevinson & Son, High House Farm, selling to Mr Dawson. Next up at £125 was a pen of 12 from Mr WR Wilson, South View.

A ring full of Suffolk X Texels from Holme House achieved £146 per head.

Plain ewes didn’t see much change in the trade, with orders now coming in for grazing ewes.
