Prime Sheep 100822

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,533 prime sheep, comprising of 2,042 prime lambs & 2,469 cast ewes and rams.

Today we held our Annual Young Handlers Show, kindly sponsored by Penrith Agricultural Show judging was in the capable hands of Mr J Raine, Fog Close, who awarded the Inglewood Edge Trophy to William Gardiner, Helm Croft, with his Texel cross lamb. Reserve Champion honours went to Sam Pollock, Wreay Hall, with his Beltex X lamb.

A much larger entry of prime lambs was forward, achieving an SQQ average of 256ppk, topping at 342ppk for a 38kg Texel cross Beltex lamb from our champion young handler, William Gardiner, Kell Springs, realising £130, purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn on behalf of Yorkshire Halal.

The sale topped at £170 (307ppk) for a superb 55kg Beltex lamb from Owen Marrs, Warwick Bridge, also purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.

Heavy lambs sold exceptionally well all day with 55kg Suffolk cross lambs achieving £148 from JM & J Fisher & Daughters, Holmwrangle, purchased by Mr N Lomax.

A consignment of first-draw Texel & Suffolk cross Mule lambs from Messrs Coulston, Hole House, averaged £130.12/260ppk for 50kg, topping at £144 for 54kg Suffolks, purchased by Mr R Skelton.

Messrs W Gribbon, Waterside Farm, sold 40kg Beltex cross Texel lambs to £129 (326ppk), purchased by Vivers Scotlamb, with this consignment of 34 averaging £121.24/295ppk for 41kg.

Cast ewes and rams came forward in great numbers with demand holding well for the stronger runs of ewes with meat, though both horned and plain ewes would see a slight drop.

The sale topped at £230 for a pen of three Texel ewes from Holme House, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. Heavy ewes topped at £169 for a ring full of Suffolk cross ewes from Riverview, purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Mr B Taylor, Thwaite Hall, sold a ring full of English Mules to £144, with plenty of pens of medium ewes achieving £118-£125.

Horned ewes topped at £108 for a pen of 18 Scotch Blackfaced, with Swaledales topping at £101 from Mr T Lowther, Askham.
