Prime Sheep 200722
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,537 prime sheep, comprising of 1,382 prime lambs & 1,155 cast ewes and rams.
A larger offering of prime lambs was forward to a complete ringside of buyers, topping at 364p/kg (£153) for a pair of 42kg Continental lambs from ES & D Noble, Mill Farm, Beckermet, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
Heavy lambs sold exceptionally well, peaking at £180 for a 79kg Texel lamb from Mr C Douglas, Wetheriggs Farm Cottage, bought by Mr Ditta, Accrington.
A consignment of twenty-seven perfectly turned-out Suffolk & Texel lambs out of Mule ewes from Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagill House, averaged £148.93 (307p/kg) for 48.5kgs.
A great consignment of Texel X lambs from Messrs TI Wetherell & Son, High & Low Buildings, averaged £150.22 (328p/kg) for 46kg.
A ring full of 59kg Texel X lambs from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, achieved £171 (290p/kg), selling to Mr R Skelton.
Cast ewes sold to a much sharper trade, with buyers going home short of requirements. Numerous ewes sold in excess of £200, topping at £270 from Holme House, bought by Mr W Shearer, a pen of six ewes from the same home sold for £230.
Horned ewes were still regularly £100 plus, and a pen of Easycare achieved £110 from Mr J Bayles, Melmerby.
