Prime Sheep - 22.06.22
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,919 prime sheep, comprising of 905 prime lambs, 368 prime hoggs & 3,646 cast ewes and rams.
A much larger show of prime lambs with much more competition around the ring and plenty of spirited bidding, with the sale averaging 314ppk, topping at 395ppk from Messrs Metcalfe, Home Farm with a pen of 39kg, Texel X Beltex Lambs, realising £154 selling to Yorkshire Halal.
Topping the sale at £166 went to Messrs J E & L M Raine & Son, Ravenwood with a pen of 45kg Texel X Beltex Lambs, weighing 45kgs selling to Mr M Bowe, with this consignment averaging 44kgs (£157.40/352ppk)
Messrs W Gribbon & Son, Waterside as always bring quality, and come presented to perfection with a consignment of 30, averaging 40kgs (360ppk/£146.50).
Heavy lambs attracted some strong competition with Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, selling 54kgs, to £164 purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Mr J D Johnston, Castle Bank sold a consignment of Texel X Mules, to average 46-51kgs (£148.80/318ppk).
Plenty of demand for hoggs, even this late in the season, with Mr S J Pigg, Gaitsgill selling Texels to £165 for 65kgs.
Mr N Holiday, Sewell Houses topped at 302ppk for 43kgs hoggs, totalling £130 selling to Mr J Khan and this consignment averaged £137.45 (278ppk), 49kgs.
We were delighted to smash our numbers again in the cast ewe ring a result of 12 active buyers on a weekly basis. The whole sale averaged £128.68 topping at £298 for 3 Texel Ewes from Mr S Lawson, Huntly Lodge selling to Mr J Tucker. A total of 82 sold in excess of £200 per head. Rams topping at £226 from Greenacres selling to Mr W Shearer.
Plenty of heavy fat ewes Suffolk X Mule & Texel X Mules £175-£185, with Suffolk’s topping at £198 from Holme House Farm.
Droves of horned ewes started to come forward with meat being very good to sell up £20 per head on the year, with Messrs S Allan & Sons, Greenhow selling 19 to £113 and 19 to £111.
Penrith seems to be the place to sell cast ewes at the moment as a result vendors are travelling from all over the UK.
