Prime Sheep - 08.06.22
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,757 prime sheep, comprising of 581 prime lambs, 421 prime hoggs & 2,755 cast ewes and rams.
A overall sale average of £140.71 was achieved topping at £191 ahead from Mr W Morrison, Aberdeen with 66kg Suffolk lambs purchased by Mr N Lomax.
Mr S Lawson, Huntly Lodge sold a consignment of 52kg lambs to average £176.17/338ppk topping at £190 for 61kgs.
45kg, Texel X Beltex Lambs achieved £185 from Mr Strong, Hewer Hill sold to West Scottish Lamb, also achieving top pence per kilo of 411ppk.
Prime Hoggs sold to a much sharper trade than ever expected with the sale topping 337ppk from Mr N Holliday, Sewell House with a pen of 38kg Texel Hoggs, achieving £128 purchased by Mr J Khan.
Heavies again were the trade of the day with Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg selling a consignment of 70 to average, 54kgs, £158.19 topping at £186 for 67kgs purchased by Mr N Lomax.
Messrs W R & F D Siddle, Honeypot sold there clean up consignment, averaging 51kgs (£158/310ppk).
Handier weights still sold regularly between 290-310ppk with good flesh and without their teeth up.
The dearest trade ever seen for ewes ever at Penrith, with 2755 to average £147.55, topping at £298 for a pair of Texel Ewes from Messrs G P Wiliams & Co, Bryn Dansi, making the trip up from North Wales, with his consignment of 14 Texel Ewes to average £269.29!!
A record number of 160 ewes, selling in excess of £200, a trade not seen anywhere else in the country.
Plenty of heavy fat commercial ewes £180-£190 with Suffolk X Mules topping at £206 from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop with all Suffolk’s sold averaging £164.59.
Hill Bred Ewes were in short supply with Scotch Blackfaced from Messrs J & M Andrews, Ayrshire topping at £135 selling to Mr J Tucker with numerous pens £120-£130.
Cast rams topped at £220 ahead for Bluefaced Leicester’s Rams from Messrs JA Ritson, Baggra Yeat purchased by Mr N Lomax. A Pair of Texel rams from Messrs J M & M A Dawson, Brigg Farm also achieved £220 selling to Mr J Khan.
