Prime Sheep 010622
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,727 prime sheep, comprising of 379 prime lambs, 697 prime hoggs & 1,651 cast ewes and rams.
A smaller show of prime lambs was forward resulting in a very dear trade throughout considering the poor show. The whole sale averaged 339ppk, topping at 431ppk for a cracking Beltex cross Texel from Messrs Metcalfe, Home Farm, weighing 41kg, realising £181 purchased by Mr M Bowe, with this consignment averaging 370ppk/£157.10/42.5kg.
The whole sale averaged £143.96 per head, topping at £182 (414ppk) for 44kg Texel lambs from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm, with this consignment averaging £154.56/342ppk.
Suffolk cross Mule lambs, weighing 55kg, achieved £164 per head from Messrs JJ & J Pollock, Scales Farm, purchased by Mr M Lomax.
Another large show of prime hoggs was forward to a very busy ringside of buyers, topping at 311ppk for a pen of 44kg Texel cross Mule hoggs realising £137, purchased by Mr J Khan, with this consignment averaging £140/300ppk.
Mr JF Edgar, Castle Nook, Alston, sold a pen of 10 Suffolk cross Mule hoggs to £177 for 65kg, purchased by Mr M Lomax.
Hill hoggs topped at 273ppk for 44kg Herdwicks from Auchengray Farms, Dumfries, realising £120 purchased by Mr W Shearer.
Possibly the dearest trade ever seen here for cast ewes with the whole sale averaging £148.53, topping at £290 for a pen of Texels from Messrs A&C Watson, Rowan Garth, Whitehaven, purchased by Mr J Tucker. A total of 72 sold in excess of £200 per head.
The best show of Suffolk ewes imaginable was forward today with all sold averaging £162.11, topping at £212 from Mr CB Abernathy, Belvedene, with numerous pens £180-£190 per head.
A shortage of horned ewes and cheviots were forward with orders going home incomplete, a pen of 20 Scotch Blackface ewes achieved £125, purchased by Mr M Lomax.
More West Cumberland vendors took advantage of the thriving live ring at Penrith, with a consignment of Charollais & Texel ewes from Mr JJ Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont, averaging £214.15.
Cast rams averaged a staggering £158.55, topping at £218 for Bluefaced Leicester and Dorset rams from Holme House, purchased by Mr M Lomax.
