On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,195 prime sheep, comprising of 61 prime lambs, 804 prime hoggs & 1,330 cast ewes and rams.
Prime lambs are now coming forward in larger numbers, with demand growing stronger as well. The sale averaged 352ppk, topping at 393ppk for a pair of 41kg Texel cross lambs from Messrs ES & D Noble, Mill Farm, Beckermet, realising £161 purchased by Cocklakes Farm Shop. The same home also topped per head at £174 for a 47kg Texel lamb purchased by Mr R Skelton, with this consignment averaging £153.94/354ppk for 43.5kg.
A superb consignment of Suffolk cross Texel lambs from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm, averaged £163.50/363ppk for 45kg.
A much smaller show of prime hoggs was forward with meat in short supply, the sale topped at £157 for 83kg Texel cross Mule tup hoggs from Messrs T Armstrong & Son, Sceugh Dyke, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
Messrs TE Irving & Sons, East Cliff, sold Texel hoggs to a top of £152, with their consignment of 56 Suffolk cross Mule & Texel cross Mule hoggs to £140.48/250ppk for 56kg.
Topping the hogg section at 319ppk was a pen of 48kg Continental hoggs from Messrs Todd, Southernby Hall, realising £153, purchased by Mr R Skelton.
Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green, sold a consignment of 36 Texel cross hoggs, weighing 54kg to average £145.46/266ppk.
A smaller show of cast ewes was forward but most sections still held last weeks high returns, the sale topped at £220 per head for a pen of three Texel ewes from Riverview, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
Heavy Suffolk cross Mule ewes topped at £175 from Holme House, purchased by Mr A Dawson.
Horned ewes still sold to some extreme returns with numerous pens of Scotch Blackfaced £105-£119 per head. Swaledale ewes topped at £115 from Messrs Thompson, Farlam Hill, purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Cast rams averaged £151.46, with several realising in excess of £200, topping at £220 for a pen of strong Continentals purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
