Prime Sheep Report 180522
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,013 prime sheep, comprising of 197 prime lambs, 764 prime hoggs & 2,052 cast ewes and rams.
Today saw over double the numbers forward in comparison to the same sale last year. Prime lambs topped at 405p/kg (£166) from Messrs ES & D Noble, Mill Farm, Beckermet, with a belting Texel cross lamb, weighing 41kg, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
A consignment of twenty-four Suffolk X Texel lambs from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm, averaged 343p/kg (£150.21) for 43kg, topping at £164 for 44kg, purchased by Mr M Bowe.
A better offering of prime hoggs was forward to a complete ringside of buyers. An overall sale average of £122 per head was achieved, topping at £167 for Texel cross hoggs from Messrs JG & RW Nevinson & Son, High House Farm, selling to Westmorland Services.
A wonderful consignment of 115 Texel cross hoggs from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, averaged £143.43 (273p/kg) for 52kg.
An SQQ average of 250p/kg was achieved, topping at 329p/kg for Beltex hoggs from Greenacres. Messrs JL Potter & Sons, Town Head, sold a run of forty Texel cross hoggs to average £131.89 (300p/kg).
Cast ewes met an unbelieve trade once again, the whole sale averaged £124.30, with eighty-two cast ewes and rams selling in excess of £200, topping at £295 on four occasions. Messrs L Skelton, Low House, smashed records with their run of thirty-four Texel & Beltex ewes selling to average £238.12.
Mr JJ Crichton, Loughrigg, sold his consignment of ewes to average £205.42, topping at £230 per head with a pen of three Charollais ewes.
Horned ewes sold exceptionally well, and were very short of buyer's requirements. Numerous pens sold between £110-£118, Messrs Elliott Bros, Harbour Flatt averaged £109 for their consignment of Swaledales.
Cast rams topped at £200 twice, firstly for a Texel from Mr AH Ritson, Ireby Hall, purchased by Mr M Helliwell. This was then matched for a Continental from Messrs W&S Brownrigg, Millbeck, bought by Mr N Lomax.
