Prime Sheep - 23.03.22
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,825 prime sheep, comprising of 7 prime lambs, 2,173 prime hoggs & 1,645 cast ewes and rams.
A much improved trade across the board with a SQQ average of 278ppk being achieved, topping at 408ppk from M/s Lowis, Galloper Park, with a pen of 10 handy weight, smart, 38kg hoggs, realising £155 ahead purchased by Mr R Vivers, with this consignment averaging 39kgs (388ppk / £151.85).
Leading in the averages and per head went to M/s Lightfoot, Gillside with a consignment of 50, averaging £150.22 for 45kg’s (334ppk) topping at £170 ahead with a pen of 43kg’s purchased by West Scottish Lamb.
Heavy hoggs met a stronger trader with the whole sale averaging £123.27. M/s R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe sold a consignment of 119 heavies, to average 263ppk / £137.57 (52kg’s) including a pen of 19 weighing 47kg’s realising £155, purchased by Mr M Bowe.
River View Farming sold a consignment of 95 over weights averaging 61kg’s, to average £134.51 topping at £140 for a pen of 65kg Texel’s being purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Swaledales topped at £115 from M/s H M & R Ivinson & Sons, Hole House for 49kg’s being purchased by Mr A Dawson and M/s S & W Maughan, Street House topping per kilo at 251ppk for 45kg’s realising £113 purchased by Mr A Dawson.
A smaller show of cast ewes and rams were forward to our complete ringside of buyers with a sale average of £125.44 up £9.28 on the week.
A new centre record was achieved on two occasions, firstly from weekly consigner Mr C Maclennan, Dalvorich, Stirling with a belting Texel ewe at £300 being purchased by Mr J Tucker with this consignment averaging a staggering £233.09.
Mr J Bland, Clea Hall also took the lime light at £300 also going to Mr J Tucker. A total of 31 sheep sold between £200 - £300!!!
Cast rams even managed to creep up to £220 for a pure Suffolk from M/s D S & P Wells & Sons, Hallgarth being purchased by Mr D Kemp, with 75 cast rams sold in total to average £129.56.
Horned ewes hit some crazy returns with M/s Lightfoot, Gillside selling a ring full of Swales to £114.
Some fine returns for Mule ewes with Riverside topping the shop at £166 for some huge ewes but plenty of other pens £140 - £149.
Heavies all day were short of requirements with Holme House selling pure Suffolks to £200 ahead.
All in all, all classes are required for next weeks sale with 15 active buyers forward each week this can only be healthy business.
