On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 73 OTM Cattle.
Cast cows and bulls met the dearest trade ever seen in this market, with the whole sale averaging 162p/kg (£1068/head). The sale topped at £1885.51 (219.5p/kg) for a pure Limousin cow, weighing 859kg, from Messrs AJ & L Birkett, Birk Howe Farm, Ambleside, selling to Mr Owain Llyr.
Black and Whites achieved the highest demand anyone could have ever wished for, with all sold averaging 158p/kg (£1099.60), topping at £1428.57 (166.5p/kg) for an eight-year-old Holstein from Mr C Johnston, Skirwith Abbey, selling to Mr L Fell. This consignment of parlour cows averaged £1109.53 (154p/kg).
A cast Holstein heifer from Messrs Wilson, Hardrigg Hall totalled £1355.38, selling to Mr L Fell, this consignment averaged 197p/kg (£1269.26).
An eight-year-old British Friesian cow from Messrs Wood, Longlands achieved a very pleasing 181.5p/kg, totalling £1324.95.
Messrs Dent, Catterlen Hall sold Holstein cows to average a staggering £1235.22 (160p/kg), with a seven-year-old cow at £1357.05.
A run of dairy-bred Aberdeen Angus cows from Lowther Park Farms averaged £1150.95 (174p/kg), peaking at £1308.11 (184.5p/kg), bought by Mr A Jarvis.
At this point there is no better way than selling through the live ring, don’t lose out on the trade and the demand in the live auction at this moment in time. Demand for farm assured, none farm assured, foreign tags, TB exempt and feeding cattle are all equally as strong right across the board.
