On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 1,525 prime hoggs and 1,771 cast ewes and rams.
Demand for spring lambs is now growing quickly with the local butchers keen to swap over. The sale topped at £150 ahead for a pen of 3 Texel x lambs weighing 46kg’s from M/s J H & E Ivinson, Plumpton Foot purchased by Cocklakes Farm Shop, Penruddock.
Prime hoggs came forward in tighter supply, especially hoggs between 30 – 44kg’s which brought in a real premium price, resulting in a SQQ average of 300ppk, up 12p on the week.
The sale topped at 420ppk from M/s R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck, with a pen of well fed and presented Beltex x Texel hoggs, weighing 40kg’s, totalling £168 ahead purchased by Yorkshire Halal. The whole consignment averaged a hefty £148.70 / 348ppk.
Some great runs of fed hoggs coming forward from local farms now with M/s W R & F D Siddle, Honeypot selling a consignment of 121 Texel x hoggs ranging from 41kg’s to 50kg’s to average £149.88 / 330ppk for 45kg hoggs. And also achieving £168 ahead for a pen of 47kg’s purchased by Cranston Quality Butchers.
A run of handy weights averaged 353ppk from M/s Hodgson, Woodfoot weighing 37kg’s totalling £132.60.
M/s Iredale, Greenbank achieved a marvellous trade for a run of 60 Cheviot x handy weight hoggs, averaging 296ppk / £113.47 for 38kg’s.
Heavies sold to a sharper trade with M/s F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green achieving £143 for Suffolk x hoggs weighing 68kg’s purchased by Mr N Lomax.
A much larger offering of cast ewes and rams was forward to our complete ringside of fourteen active buyers, resulting in a sale average of £136.01 for all sold.
The sale topped at £296 for a pen of six Texel ewes from Holme House, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham. A total of 72 cast sheep sold in excess of £200 per head. The top consignment average of £217.85 was achieved by Messrs JM & SM Priestley, Cracrop Farm.
Cast rams averaged a staggering £150.32, topping at £225 for a Charollais from Mr S Lawson, Huntly Lodge Farm, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
Horned ewes achieved one of the dearest trades of the season with a ring full of 21 Scotch Blackfaces realising £128 and another pen of 30 at £121 from the same home, purchased by Pickstock Foods. Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, sold a pen of 20 Swaledale ewes to £114.
Numerous runs of heavy Suffolk cross Mule and Texel cross Mule ewes were achieving £175-£180 per head. Mule ewes topped at £158 for a pair of Scotch Mules from Messrs Sowerby, Sycamore Rise, with English Mules topping at £149 from Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank.
Goats were in short supply, with young Billy goats selling to £120 from Mr T Catto, Peterhead, purchased by Mr Ditta.
One of the dearest trades of the season was witnessed today and many more are required for our sale next week.
