Prime Sheep - 20.04.22
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,575 prime sheep, comprising of 1,674 prime hoggs & 1,901 cast ewes and rams.
A great number of primestock for the time of year and demand being exceptionally strong for hoggs properly fed, with so many under finished hoggs coming forward.
The sale topped at 437ppk for a pen of 38kgs Beltex X Texel Hoggs realising £166 from Messrs A J & F M Harrison, Grange Hall purchased by Yorkshire Halal with the final draw of hoggs of the season from this home, averaging a staggering 393ppk/£144 (36.5kgs).
Heavy Hoggs met a much-improved trade with numbers being miles short of requirements. The sale topped at £171 ahead for a pen of Beltex Hoggs from Messrs R C Mitchell, Mirkbooths weighing 65kgs, purchased by Mr R Skelton.
Suffolk hoggs topped at £170 ahead from Messrs Siddle, Honeypot purchased by West Scottish Lamb. A consignment of 54 Texel X Suffolk X Mule Hoggs from Messrs T E Irving & Son, East Cliff, averaging £138.31 for 57kgs Hoggs peaking at £142 for 60kg Texel X Mules.
The demand for cast ewes and rams goes from strength to strength with a record number of buyers around the ringside resulting in the sale averaging £132.38 with numerous pens of £200 ahead in several breed categories, topping at £299 ahead from Backmuir Livestock. Closely followed at £295 from A H Ritson, Ireby Hall with Texel Ewes purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
Heavy Ewes would be a good £10-£15 ahead up again with Suffolk’s topping at £215 from Mr S Lawson, with all Suffolk Ewes sold averaging £158.92. Mule Ewes topped at £161 from Messrs Powley, Blands Farm and closely followed at £155 for a pen of 12 from Mr W H Brass, Low Row.
Vendors couldn’t believe the returns for all classes. Cast rams averaged a steaming £155.37 topping at £232 for Charollais rams purchased by Mr N Lomax and a ring full of 7 powerful Charollais achieved £215 from Holme House.
Hill Bred Ewes are in huge demand, with North Country Cheviots achieving £160 ahead for a pen of 13 with all sold averaging £122.30 and horned ewes topping £134 for a pen of 13 Scotch Blackfaced and closely followed at £129 for a pen of 19 with all sold averaging £105.70, unlimited numbers are required for next weeks sale.
