On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers' Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,639 prime sheep, comprising of 1,806 prime hoggs and 1,833 cast ewes and rams.
A pleasing entry of prime hoggs were forward with a SQQ average of 279ppk being achieved up 12p on the week. Topping at 373ppk on 2 occasions firstly from Mr B Strong, Grapes Barn with a Texel x Beltex hogg, 40kg’s realising £149, purchased by Vivers Scotlamb LTD and secondly from M/s P L & A Johnston, Silverband with a dozen Texel x Hoggs weighing 40kg’s totalling £149 purchasing by West Scottish Lamb, with this consignment averaging 39-50kg’s (365ppk / £144).
M/s W Gribbon, Waterside, Dumfries making the trip down to Penrith with a cracking run of 31 smart handy weight Beltex x Texel hoggs weighing 40kg’s averaging 337ppk / £136.60.
More demand for heavy weight hoggs with M/s R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe averaging £131.45 (257ppk) for 51kg’s. With several pens across the day £5 – 8 ahead more then last week.
M/s H M & R Ivinson, Hole House sold a consignment of Mule’s over weights, to average £126.75 topping at £130 purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Some great pens of Scotch Blackface hoggs were forward from M/s T Armstrong & Sons, Sceugh Dyke selling a pen of 46kg’s hoggs, to £119 and 44kg’s to £114.
A bonanza cast ewe trade was witnessed with a sale average of £105.94 being achieved. This included 250 pure Shetlands ewes in this average.
Texel ewes stole the show with Backmuir Livestock achieving a new market record of £270 ahead, for 4 Texel ewes purchased by Pak Mecca Meats with a total of 148 Texel ewes sold averaging £167.30 with numerous pens of ewes £200 plus.
Horned ewes smashed peoples expectations with Scotch Blackface never been seen as dear before, with them topping at £120 and a consignment of 86 averaging £105.52 from Holme House.
M/s C W & Y Dixon & Sons, Haresceugh Castle sold a pen of Swaledales to £103 ahead purchased by Pickstock Foods. R Mcbride & Sons, Stenries, Carrutherstown averaged £95.53 for a consignment of 30 Swaledale ewes.
Cast Rams met a furious trade with Mr J Winter, Clickham achieving £220 ahead for Texels purchased by Mr N Lomax.
