Prime Sheep - 02.02.22
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,298 prime sheep, comprising of 2,479 prime hoggs & 1,819 cast ewes & rams.
A larger entry of Prime Hoggs and selling to an increased demand with a SQQ average pf 286ppk being achieved.
Topping the sale of 381ppk went to Messrs Lighfoot, Gillside, with a pen of 42kg, Texel X Hoggs realising £160 ahead purchased by Yorkshire Halal. Also, the same home selling 46kgs to £162 ahead.
Over three quarters of the sale being heavy hoggs, showing the great demand and trade here at Penrith each week, with several strong orders in operation. The whole sale averaging £124.89 peaking at £168 from Messrs R H & J R Little, Park Nook purchased by Mr J Tucker with this consignment of hoggs averaging £154.86.
Messrs J G & R W Nevinson & Sons, High House sold their usual consignment of 18 wed fed hoggs to average 63kg realising £153.39.
M/s E & R Brass & Son, Barnskew sold a consignment of well bred heavy hoggs to average £155.40/313ppk for 49.5kgs.
A run of 45 well fed Suffolk X Mule Hoggs from Messrs W M & D W Hutton, Fern House averaging a staggering £144.38/265ppk for 54.5kgs.
Mule Hoggs sold to a sharp trade with plenty of competition around the ring peaking at £146 ahead for 63kgs hoggs, from Mr P Bousfield, Glasslyn House and Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House selling 40 mules to average £132.97 for 52kgs purchased by Mr N Lomax.
Cast Ewes met last weeks sharp trade easy enough, and fat most definitely dearer considering most sales this week reporting it less. The sale averaged £100.48 topping at £248 ahead for four Texel Ewes from Holme House purchased by Mr W Shearer on behalf of Pak Mecca Meats.
A total of 93 ewes sold in excess of £150 and 18 selling in excess of £200.
Fat Mule ewes topped at £129 from Backmuir Livestock selling to Mr A Dawson.
Horned ewes still kept up with last weeks fast trade, with Scotch Blackface topping at £110 from Backmuir Livestock. Swaledales topped at £96 from Mr G E Harker, Murton Hall with this consignment of 51 averaging £85.53.
