Prime Sheep - 26.01.22
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers' Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,846 Prime sheep, comprising of 2,515 prime hoggs and 2,331 cast ewes and rams.
A fantastic show of mainly heavy hoggs were forward, with demand being sharper than expected, heading in the right direction. Handy weights topped at 377ppk from M/s Lightfoot, Gillside with a pen of 43kg’s Beltex x Texel Hoggs realising £162 purchased by Yorkshire Halal, closely followed with a pen of 12, weighing 43kg’s achieving £157 purchased by Mr M Bowe.
The whole sale averaged £125.81 up £5 ahead on average on the week, with a top in the heavy hoggs section of £160 from High Side, weighing 65kg’s for Texel x Mule Hoggs purchased by Farmers Fresh Wales.
Some great runs of heavy hoggs were forward with M/s R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe selling a run of 63 heavy butcher hoggs, to average 50.5kg’s (£140.02 / 276ppk).
M/s W & S E Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall sold a run of well-fed heavies to average 54kg’s realising £143.
McTaggart’s Brothers & Co, Castle Douglas sold several pens of heavy hoggs £150 plus, peaking at £157 for a pen of 59kg’s, selling to Mr N Lomax with his consignment averaging £137.76.
M/s Lowis, Waterside House sold a ring full of 26 Mules hoggs weighing 55kg’s realising £137 ahead with several other pens at £130 per head.
Cast Ewes come forward in large droves to our complete ringside of buyers with a sale average of £107.54 being achieved. A total of 117 ewes and rams sold in excess of £150 a head topping at £240 ahead for Texel’s from M/s J M & S M Priestley, Cracrop Farm selling to Pak Mecca Meats with this consignment averaging £183.63 with all Texel ewes, averaging £142.20.
Suffolk ewes topped at £167 ahead from C Kelly & E Bellas, Croft Ends Farm selling to Mr W Shearer.
Heavy Mules sold in excess of £120 a head topping at £124 from Lodge Farm. Horned ewes topped at £108 a head for Swaledales from M/s Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill with the run averaging £99.67. Plenty of pens of Scotch Blackfaced to £90 to £98 ahead.
Young goats topped at £110 for a pen of 6 from M/s D & R Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill.
