On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their opening sale of 3,729 prime sheep, comprising of 2,169 prime hoggs & 1,560 cast ewes & rams.

A better show of prime hoggs was forward to our complete ringside of buyers with an SQQ average of 288ppk being achieved. The sale topped at 367ppk for a pen of 39kg Continental hoggs from Messrs FJ & EM Mason & Son, Sickergill, realising £143 per head, purchased by Vivers Scotlamb, this consignment averaged 316ppk/£130/41kg.

A run of 40 Texel hoggs from Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, averaged a staggering 326ppk/£134.47/41kg.

A sale average of £127.68 per head was achieved, topping at £164 for 67kg Texel cross Mule hoggs from Messrs Sowerby, Sycamore Rise, purchased by Mr J Tucker.

Messrs PD Hird, Broomhill, sold a run of heavy hoggs to average £150.94/281ppk for 53.5kg.

Commercial hoggs sold to a fast trade with English Mules topping at 263ppk from Mr JF Wilkin, Slack Farm Cottage, for a pen of 30, weighing 46kg, totalling £121.

Handy weight hoggs were in short supply with Messrs RM & LA Woodhouse & Son, Howe Farm, selling a ring full of 34kg Texels to £105/308ppk, purchased by Mr N Lomax.

Cast ewes were short of numbers, demand was extremely strong with all buyers keen to purchase. A sale average of £103.46 was achieved, topping at £260 from Messrs Graham, Hallrigg, purchased by Mr W Shearer, this consignment of Texel and Suffolk cross Mules averaged £174.93.

Weight was good to sell with first-time customer Mr M Gall, Aberdeen, selling a run of 108 mainly Texel ewes to average £146.70.

Horned ewes realised a strong trade with Messrs R McBride & Sons, Carrutherstown, selling a ring full of Scotch Blackfaced ewes to £109 per head, purchased by Mr N Lomax, this consignment averaged £101.22.

Cast rams topped at £190 per head for a Bluefaced Leicester from Mr SJ Robinson, Bridge End Farm. Plenty of Continental rams sold for £160-£170.
